Spinning on sparkling hooks and captivating beats, Los Angeles-based vocalist and songwriter Tan conveys an engaging pop romanticism through his expressive, charismatic voice.
Born on the island of Penang in Malaysia, Tan is a young man on a journey. He notes that in his homeland, a career in the music business is not a common aspiration. “Studying, getting good grades, and going to a university are supposed to lead to a good life,” he says. “But I believe that if you only live once, you’ve got to do it the way you want. I always knew I wanted a career in music.”
He began early, making his television debut at age 10 on Astro Kid's Talent Quest Season One (Malaysia’s version of Star Search). Enrolling in audio engineering classes in order to learn more about music, he subsequently studied songwriting online with Berklee College of Music. Then he became aware of the distinguished College of Contemporary Music, Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA.
Tan took a giant leap of faith, moved nearly 9,000 miles directly into the heart of Hollywood, and enrolled in the school. Joining a community of creators was key to his development. “It was the right decision. I've met some of the most talented people and music business experts who have inspired me as an artist,” he confirms.
To record the songs for his debut EP, Tan connected to some celebrated collaborators; among them producer Mario Marchetti (Demi Lovato, Jennifer Lopez); and Grammy-winning Capitol Records mastering engineer Evren Göknar (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mariah Carey.) “I'm overwhelmed by what's happening around me and thankful every single day,” says Tan.
Bearing witness to an ascending career built forward motion and creative interaction, Tan says, “I am a strong believer that you have to go for what feels right for you.” The world becomes smaller and the music becomes bigger. As an international citizen, Tan’s songs are connected to collective emotions that reveal far more than words.
